Notes from Yukiko’s Desk

Dear AGAC whanau,

I cannot believe this coming week we will observe Ash Wednesday already! It seems not so long ago when we celebrated Christmas! This Sunday, we are commemorating the Transfiguration of Jesus Christ.

The feast of Transfiguration can be celebrated just before Lent begins, or the second Sunday of Lent, or on 6th of August. Some of you may remember that we observed the feast on the first Sunday in August when I shared the story of Hiroshima two years ago. So, it is possible to celebrate the Transfiguration once, twice, or three times a year (or never)!

As I was reflecting on what was happening around our lives, this year I decided to observe the feast this Sunday. It makes a significant moment in Christian calendar, bridging the season of Epiphany and the journey of Lent.

The brightness of the Transfiguration certainly belongs to Epiphany, but the shadow of the Transfiguration leads to Lent. The Transfiguration challenges us to think in a new way, just as the disciples see Jesus in a new way. I am inviting you to take that challenge together with us all.

Anchored in Christ,

Yukiko
