Notes from Yukiko’s Desk

Dear AGAC friends,

Mānawatia a Matariki!

I recently learned that Mata-ariki has two meanings. One of the meanings refers to the cluster of stars. It also literally means the ‘eyes of god’ (mata-eyes, ariki– lord). I was inspired by what Rev’d Dr. Hirini, the new principal of St. John’s Theological College, said in his article;

Mata-ariki is a hopeful event — it symbolises renewal, reawakening, and revival. Traditionally, Mata-ariki was a time to remember those who had died in the last year. But it was also a happy event — crops had been harvested and seafood and birds had been collected. With plenty of food in the storehouses, Mata-ariki was a time for singing, dancing, and feasting.

This Sunday, for those who want to remember loved ones who have gone before them, the candle station will be available near the altar. You can simply come to the table and light the candle before or after receiving communion.

For reflection, as this will be the fifth Sunday of the month, we will have a testimony Sunday. (We would like to ask someone to give a testimony when we have a fifth Sunday apart from major themed Sundays). This time, I will give my testimony. Looking forward to sharing my korero with you.

Arohanui,

Yukiko
