Notes from Yukiko’s Desk

Dear AGAC whanau,

Last week in our Northshore clergy cluster group meeting, we had a presentation from Age Concern New Zealand  (visit: www.ageconcernauckland.org.nz). They offer a wide range of support to older adults(65+), from advice, information and resources through to free counselling, companionship, advocacy with government departments, help with health, finances and technology, in-home care and handyman tasks, to presentations on variety of topics, and even brokering home-share/boarding living arrangements for older people who are keen to have someone else in the house for a bit of income and company. Our Diocese has embarked on a partnership with Age Concern through the Selwyn Foundation, and we’re hoping to increase people’s awareness of what Age Concern does in the community and connect people up with things that will be helpful. Please feel free to pick up a flyer about them (with a magnet for your fridge). Perhaps you could think of someone who would benefit from tapping into some of their services. They are also looking for volunteers, and maybe you could be a volunteer for home visiting or handyman help.

The image of the cover of this newsletter beautifully illustrates today’s Psalm. “Even the sparrow has found a home, and the  swallow a nest for herself, where she may have her young—a place near your altar, Lord Almighty, my King and my God (Psalm 84:3).” This tender imagery speaks of belonging and safety. There are days when I’ve felt like that sparrow. Small. Wandering. Unsure of where I belong. Days when I don’t have answers or direction, only the ache of needing to know I am held. At such times, God whispers me: even you have a place here. In this new season, as you are walking along the way, you might find a bird’s nest in a tree or on the ground. If it happens, I believe that is a message from God.
